President Obama has declared Monday, January 20, 2014, as a National Day of Service in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Pursuant to the president’s call to action, many institutions and organizations offer opportunities for Americans to volunteer serving their local communities.

If you would like to participate in this effort, mark your calendar for Monday, January 20, 2014, 10am-2pm and join NOVA students, faculty and staff for the Fifth Annual NOVA SERVES: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

The service event will take place at the Alexandria Campus on Monday, January 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year’s event will consist of assembling 20,000 food kits in partnership with the Stop Hunger Now organization.

T-shirts will be provided to the first 200 volunteers. Join the movement to end hunger in our lifetime. Help us reach our goal to package more than 20,000 meals. Working together we can create a world without hunger. To register please click here.

If you are unable to attend this event, members of the NOVA family may choose to participate in the 27th Annual We Feed Our People MLK Holiday celebration through service.  Saturday and Sunday January 18 – 19, volunteers will gather at the Howard University Law School cafeteria to prepare meals to feed the most vulnerable, our homeless population. On Monday, January 20, volunteers are asked to gather at the “Big Chair” in the Anacostia section of the District of Columbia at 10:00 a.m. to serve the prepared meals and provide warm clothing to the homeless. Slots for volunteers to work are for 2 hour periods, however those who choose to do so may volunteer for longer periods of time. To volunteer, please click here.

Please consider celebrating Dr. King’s legacy through these various volunteer opportunities.

Make A Difference: National Night Out-Tonight, Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Be on the lookout, tonight, for a National Night Out event in your neighborhood!  National Night out is a crime/drug prevention event held yearly in neighborhoods, sometimes at schools or even in local shopping center parking lots.
National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and is designed to promote awareness of crime and drug prevention as well as to generate support for local anticrime programs,  strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships. Another purpose for the event is to send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

To visit a local National Night Out event or for more information, please click here.

“Alternative” College Breaks Increasing in Popularity

A small group of students at Bowdoin College in Maine turned their winter break from classes this year into a grand adventure.  Through an Alternative Winter Break program, a group of students gave up a week of their winter holiday to help homeless, refugee and immigrant communities in Portland, Oregon.  Living in meager accommodations, these students worked with English language learners in downtown Portland to bridge communication gaps, help with instruction, and generally serve as a supporting presence in local shelters. The 12-hour a day volunteer work was exhausting but rewarding, and led some students to begin volunteering with local community organizations regularly, or study issues of social injustice through their assignments in college.
Options for local volunteer work in the D.C. metro region abound.  However, if you would like to couple a travel adventure with your volunteer work, you might take a look at the options for an Alternative Spring Break with the United Way.  Giving back to our world while getting to see other parts of the country is a “win-win” scenario for many college students.  Consider joining the trend!
