ELI Tip #10: What is a Dynamic Session?

The term "dynamic" refers to the session dates, specifically, any course that follows non-standard critical enrollment dates and may include courses taught on campus, online or a combination of both. Dynamic courses can start and end at any time before or after the standard semester. To see the dates assigned to a class, follow the navigation and search for the class. The basic data page for the class should show the class session as "dynamic" and should show the start and end dates. Refer here for critical enrollment dates for ELI courses.

Remember that "dynamic" refers only to the enrollment dates and not the way the course is taught. Online courses are designated as "Virtual." If you are using NOVAConnect to search for online courses, select "Additional Search Criteria" and under "Location," select "Virtual and ELI."

  3. Great question. Students enrolled in ELI distance learning courses can accelerate the course assignments and schedule. You should check with the individual instructor and your course information in the course syllabus for details. While it may not be possible to complete the course in 6 weeks, some ELI distance courses offer an accelerated 8-week option. Keep in mind, you will have to work twice as much to complete your course early. For 16-week courses, we recommend that students schedule 2-3 hours of study per credit hour (for a 3-credit course, plan to study approximately 6-9 hours per week). If you are accelerating the course, you should be prepared to spend twice as much time.

  9. It really depends on the semester schedule. You would need to look at the dates for the course you are interested in and if they vary from the typical critical dates, it would be considered a dynamic session.
