To be Successful: Time is of the Essence

Are you taking an accelerated course – a 6 or 8 week course – for the first time? Are you taking online courses after not being a student for some time? Are you trying to juggle a course load alongside a demanding course load or hectic work or family schedule? No matter your circumstances, make sure you don’t lose track of time and motivation!

No matter the length of summer course(s), it is important to remember that missing even one week of the coursework could leave you behind or put you in jeopardy of being automatically dropped from the course.

The College of Southern Maryland has composed a list of 10 Tips for Success in Online Courses. It gives some great suggestions – here are the top 5:

1. Start the Semester Right – BE PREPARED

• Purchase Text Books
• Ensure you have the technology & tech components needed
• Reach out to instructor and classmates
• Record tests and assignments on your calendar
• Create a dedicated place to study
• Establish a regular study schedule

2. Embrace your Syllabus - Check it early & OFTEN

3. Become a master of online tools
• If you are new to Bb, visit a sample course
• Save links to useful resources such as SmartThinking and Library Services as favorites on your browser
• Stay connected to ELI by following us on Twitter or befriending us on Facebook

4. Become a Respected Distant Participant – Make yourself KNOWN
Class discussions via Bb or another site can play a key part in your grade, participation, and overall gain from the course.

5. Stay on Schedule and Stay Motivated – In the end you are only hurting yourself by slacking off
• NEVER be afraid to ask for help – And don’t wait until the last minute to do so! Great places to seek help include, your instructor, classmates, ELI Success Coaches & Counselors

Everyone at ELI wishes you luck and success this semester!
