56th Annual Highland Maple Festival

March 8-9 & 15-16, 2014

The Highland County Chamber of Commerce presents the 56th Annual Highland Maple Festival.

Take a look at the website here.

"Take a step back in time to Highland County, "Virginia's Switzerland." Travel back roads and mountain byways to the annual Highland Maple Festival. Held on the 2nd and 3rd weekends of March, the Maple Festival has been an annual event in Highland County, Virginia, since 1958.

Each year, thousands of visitors are drawn to this unspoiled, rural region of Virginia to celebrate the 'opening' of the trees and observe the process of maple syrup-making. Sugar camp tours provide a unique and educational experience that portrays a rapidly vanishing way of American life."

Word Games that Give Back

Classes end today!!!  During the long break, take time to stimulate your brain as you explore Charitii.com!  Have fun while giving back and challenge you brain as you work on crossword puzzles for charity.
Charitii’s website advises that by playing a crossword-style word game, you will be donating to various valuable resources. According to the website, when you play, you can choose which charity you want to play for.  Ironically, many of the benefiting charities are environmentally focused which aligns well to the No Impact Man Common reader program that ELI Student Life just completed.  As you explore the website you will learn that you can donate clean water to communities living in extreme poverty, give food to malnourished children and families, provide school education for children around the world, or even help protect our rainforests. By playing Charitii.com you are automatically helping, “one word puzzle at a time”.
Brain games such as crossword puzzles help boost and sharpen your brain, enhance your vocabulary and memorization, and, in this case, while also giving back!   For further benefits of crossword puzzles please click here.

Weekend Fun: Civil War Christmas in Camp

If you are a history enthusiast or looking for an affordable and educational weekend activity, the “Civil War Christmas in Camp at the Fort Ward Museum in Alexandria, Virginia may be the perfect leisure activity to experience.

And, weather permitting, soldier-led tours of the fort will be offered.
A Civil War Santa will listen to children’s holiday wishes, read “The Night Before Christmas,” and visit troops in camp. If you have children, they will have an opportunity to create a Victorian ornament or greeting card, and see examples of period ornaments on the Museum’s Victorian tree.

Avoid a Black Friday Meltdown!

What is on your holiday shopping list?  Black Friday can be a great time to find some amazing deals and get shopping out of the way. Likewise, it can be a crazy time that can cause a lot of stress.  Plan well and consider the following strategies to promote a safe and successful day of shopping.

Ø  Have a plan.  To start your ‘plan of attack’ explore the store flyers and visit Black Friday.com.  Write down the items that you plan to buy and the cost of each to prevent wandering without direction and forgetting what was on sale and where.  Be sure to bring the ads with you!

Ø  Bring a friend to join in the fun.  If you have a limited budget, ask them to stop you if you are lured into buying something that was not on your list or in your budget.

Ø  Prepare Some Snacks to Bring Along. If you are on a mission to visit as many stores as possible, avoid lines at restaurants and save money by bringing some healthy snacks and a few water bottles along.

Ø  Consider visiting small boutiques and gift shops where the crowds might be less. You may find the prices are equivalent and you may also find some unique, fun gifts while also avoiding some of the Black Friday craziness.

Ø  Price Matching.  If you do not have time to visit multiple stores, bring your flyers to one store.  Many stores offer price matching---show them the flyer and they may be willing to match the price on the exact same item.

Ø  Unable to get out and shop?  Spend time with your friends and family and consider Cyber Monday and shop from the comfort of your home!

Ø  If you are a night owl, many stores are beginning to offer their Black Friday late on Thanksgiving Day—this may be the perfect opportunity to get a head start and get some walking in after a big Thanksgiving meal.

If you plan ahead with the right agenda and resources, Black Friday can be less stressful than you planned.  Or, you can choose to spend quality time with your family, and prepare for Cyber Monday.

Beat the Heat at a Water Park

As the days seem to get hotter and hotter, if you are looking for a way to cool off, consider cooling off at a local water park!  A few in the Northern Virginia area include (but are not limited to):
Water Mine Family Swim Hole, Reston, VA - operated by Fairfax County Park Authority.  According to the website, “The Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole offers more than an acre of slides, flumes, sprays, showers, floatables and interactive play features, circled by Rattlesnake River with a 2.5 mile per hour current that gently nudges tubes along. A bit of the old west is recreated here. Kids careen off covered wagons, float on rattlesnakes and dash through showers tipped from water-filled ore carts….while the Water Mine's attractions are designed for elementary-aged children, there's something here for everyone. Tenderfoot Pond, with its pint-sized slides and gentle bubblers, gives toddlers a perfect place for water play. Teenagers can join a game of water volleyball, and everyone will enjoy going with the flow in a tube on Rattlesnake River.”.  For more information to include cost and hours, please visit their website.
Splash Down Water Park, Manassas, VA – privately owned and operated.  Splash Down is Northern Virginia’s largest water park.  Cool off in the lazy river or enjoy the leisure pool, activity pool, log walk, tropical twister and cannonball slides!  To learn more, please visit their website.
Volcano Island Water Park, Sterling, VA – operated by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority and located at Algonkian Regional Park.  According to the website, “Volcano Island Waterpark [is] Sterling’s favorite place [to] cool off and have fun….
