What is the difference between a Guaranteed Admission and Articulation Agreement?

Guaranteed Admissions Agreements mean as a NOVA student, you are offered Guaranteed Admissions to a variety of four-year colleges and universities when you meet the requirements of the written Agreement between NOVA and that college. These Agreements guarantee admission to a college or university; but most do not guarantee admission to a specific program.
NOVA and the VCCS also have special articulation agreements with several four-year colleges and universities. These articulation agreements define the way courses, programs or entire categories of programs transfer to another institution and may include admission guarantees.
In order to be considered for guaranteed admission, a student must:
·       Complete a transfer degree (A.A. or A.S.)

·       Meet the minimum G.P.A. requirement

·       Obtain a “C” or better in all applicable courses for their degree

·       Take a minimum number of credits at NOVA (can be up to 15 credits)

·       Some institutions require specific courses

·       Complete a letter of intent, if needed
You can view the list of GAAs and AAs via NOVA’s transfer webpage. It is important to read the agreements carefully, so you know what specific requirements you will need to meet. NOVA also has developed a great webpage that is all about Guaranteed Admission Agreements! Check out the four-minute video.
The ELife Blog Team would like to thank ELI Counselor/Instructor, Kim Burkle, for her time and effort creating this informational blog.   Want more information on transfer planning? Plan to attend our webinar, facilitated by Kim Burkle, on Transfer Planning.  For dates and information, please click here and scroll down to ‘Transfer Planning’.

What is Advising Week?

Advising week is an opportunity for students to meet with faculty, counselors, or advising specialists to discuss registration for the following semester.  During this session you will explore your options for coursework within your major and discuss your goals.  You and your advisor will both play a part in your success at NOVA:

Advisor Responsibilities:
• Support students through a self-assessment and decision-making process.
• Assist students with exploring their educational and career goals.
• Aid students with choosing a program of study and select appropriate courses based on degree program, interests, values, and skills.
• Assist students with scheduling courses to fulfill general education and degree requirements.

Student Responsibilities:
• Come prepared for the advising session.
• Be an active participant in the advising process.
• Develop SMART goals.
• Be familiar with NOVA’s resources, programs, policies, and procedures.
• Accept responsibility for decisions made in the advising process.

In order to ensure that you get the most out of your advising sessions, preparation is key.  Have a list of long and short term goals ready with respect to what classes interest you and/or what major or career you are interested in pursuing (or if you haven’t chosen one yet, what areas of interest you are thinking about based on your strengths and skills).  Also, having a general idea about what courses you are thinking about will give the person you are working with a working foundation to foster a productive advising session.  Keep in mind it is a two-way street.  If you do your part in preparing, the person who is advising you will be able to better address your needs based on what direction you are contemplating.  Good luck and best wishes for an empowering advising session!

Advising Week, October 31 – November 4

What are your long-term educational goals? Do you know what your career goals are? Do you have a defined path planned out to achieve those goals?

If you answered, “No” to any of these questions, please note that Advising Week at NOVA starts next week!

We are happy to report that there will be multiple opportunities for advising in preparation for the spring semester. We strongly recommend that you plan ahead and explore these resources early so you will be on track when spring semester begins. Campuses are organizing a variety of activities to support Advising Week. Also, as an ELI student, we have five on-site counselors who can help you virtually from 8:30 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday. ELI Counselors can be contacted via email or phone at ELICounselors@nvcc.edu or (703) 323-2425.

Advising week immediately precedes the start of Priority Registration for the Spring 2012 semester. More information regarding career exploration, choosing a program of study, how to prepare to transfer to a four-year institution, and so much more can be found on the Counseling and Advising page of NOVA’s website.

Good luck on your journey to academic success!

Disability Support Services for ELI Students

NOVA’s disability support services are not limited to traditional on-campus students; ELI’s on-line students may also request appropriate accommodations for documented disabilities!  Perhaps the best way to start the inquiry or request process would be to contact ELI’s Disability Support Services (DSS) Liaison, David Highsmith.  David is one of ELI’s counselors, and he is available to address general questions you may have about disability support services; he can also walk you through the process for requesting accommodations at NOVA.  You may reach David at dhighsmith@nvcc.edu or 703-323-2404.
Another great source for information on disability support services at NOVA is the DSS website After carefully reviewing pertinent portions of this website, check-out the “Students with Disabilities Intake Packet” link in the “How to Begin” paragraph.  Please note that the intake packet (and supporting documentation) must be processed through one of NOVA’s six campus-based DSS offices – and you’ll find contact information for all six offices directly below the “How to Begin” paragraph.
