The Traditional New Year's Eve Kiss

Among the many traditions celebrated on New Year’s Eve, the kiss at the stroke at midnight seems to be the most prominently featured!   Have you ever wondered about the meaning behind this traditional kiss?
According to a posting on the Ryan Seacrist Blog, the kiss at the stroke of midnight is practiced because it is believed that if you fail to kiss, you will face a year of coldness and lack of affection and loneliness for the rest of the year.  Other sources suggest it is about bonding and strengthening ties that you want to maintain in the future.

We wish you a safe and happy 2014!

Looking for a Recipe?

With the holidays upon us, it is a great time to try your favorite old recipe or discover a new favorite.  One favorite holiday treat most of us love is fudge!  Say the word, fudge, and everyone comes running!  Butterscotch, peanut butter, vanilla, layered, and/or chocolate fudge is often a holiday staple—not to mention a summer favorite on the boardwalk.
Fudge recipes vary from complex to simple.  The recipe that I sometimes make is, Fantasy Fudge, which is located on the Kraft Recipes website.  This recipe even provides steps to cook the fudge quickly in the microwave, and there are only 7 ingredients!
If fudge doesn’t interest you, explore the web for your favorite new or old recipe.  There are many great recipe sites to choose from including: Food Network, Betty Crocker, Savory Sweet Life, Simply Recipes and more!  You can even create a recipe based on the ingredients you have on-hand by visiting the Super Cook website.
Do you have a favorite recipe you’d like to share?  If you do, post it in our comments section to share with others! Happy cooking….

Avoid a Black Friday Meltdown!

What is on your holiday shopping list?  Black Friday can be a great time to find some amazing deals and get shopping out of the way. Likewise, it can be a crazy time that can cause a lot of stress.  Plan well and consider the following strategies to promote a safe and successful day of shopping.

Ø  Have a plan.  To start your ‘plan of attack’ explore the store flyers and visit Black Friday.com.  Write down the items that you plan to buy and the cost of each to prevent wandering without direction and forgetting what was on sale and where.  Be sure to bring the ads with you!

Ø  Bring a friend to join in the fun.  If you have a limited budget, ask them to stop you if you are lured into buying something that was not on your list or in your budget.

Ø  Prepare Some Snacks to Bring Along. If you are on a mission to visit as many stores as possible, avoid lines at restaurants and save money by bringing some healthy snacks and a few water bottles along.

Ø  Consider visiting small boutiques and gift shops where the crowds might be less. You may find the prices are equivalent and you may also find some unique, fun gifts while also avoiding some of the Black Friday craziness.

Ø  Price Matching.  If you do not have time to visit multiple stores, bring your flyers to one store.  Many stores offer price matching---show them the flyer and they may be willing to match the price on the exact same item.

Ø  Unable to get out and shop?  Spend time with your friends and family and consider Cyber Monday and shop from the comfort of your home!

Ø  If you are a night owl, many stores are beginning to offer their Black Friday late on Thanksgiving Day—this may be the perfect opportunity to get a head start and get some walking in after a big Thanksgiving meal.

If you plan ahead with the right agenda and resources, Black Friday can be less stressful than you planned.  Or, you can choose to spend quality time with your family, and prepare for Cyber Monday.

Dealing with Holiday Stressors This Season

Traditionally speaking, we all know that the holidays are time of active celebration. Hopefully, you are looking forward to a festive and fun holiday season this year. You are probably also aware that the holidays can be a time of stress and overindulgence (i. e., holiday parties) in a way that might make you feel lethargic and drained. Below are some common holiday stressors and methods of combating their effects:

• Prevent burnout from overbooking yourself for too many party obligations and the pressures of holiday shopping. Use a post-it note or a journal to write down your purpose for this holiday season and create meaning during this hectic time of year. For example, maybe you want to bring some comfort and meaning to someone who is going through a difficult time or engage in volunteer work for those who are less fortunate. It could be something very simple such as giving a compliment to someone every day or making at least one new friend during the holiday season.

• Set boundaries for yourself prior to holiday events to prevent overindulgences and negative habits. The holidays, parties especially, can trigger overindulgences that we might otherwise have in check most of the time. Having an internal awareness of our past weaknesses will help set goals and develop strategies to overcome them this season. For example, if you tend to overeat starchy foods and sweets at parties and feel drained and exhausted afterwards, having a light snack before the party may help you tame this urge. Or, if you tend to overspend from holiday sales and gift shopping, create a budget ahead of time and a monetary figure that you will not exceed. A good tip is to make a list of all of the bad habits from previous holiday seasons and next to each one, a coping strategy to prevent negative consequences.

• Spend time reflecting (e. g., by recording in a journal) on what you need emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually to feel healthy and strong. It may be to stick to certain dietary guidelines by getting more protein and fewer starches to maximize your energy. Or, it may be to spend time with a friend or support group once a week as a way of feeling a deeper sense of belonging.

• Make it a point to spend time with a good friend or supportive relative to prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation that sometimes surround us when we are away from close relatives that live far away.

• Keep an open mind and set out to achieve connections and insights to combat succumbing to stressful and overwhelming feelings that this time of year can sometimes bring. Set out to make some new connections with positive people or to strengthen an existing relationship in your life. Additionally, train your thinking to anticipate positive surprises rather than dwell on the stressors that sometimes come with family gatherings and holiday commercialism.

• On a daily basis, find at least one thing, person or situation that you are grateful for and make a mental note or jot it down. Make it a goal to record a minimum number of things to be grateful for in a “gratitude journal”.

Overall, by looking at last year's overindulgences and the triggers that can lead to holiday burnout, you can develop new strategies for creating meaning during this time of year.

Saint Patrick's Day - Historical Facts

Saint Patrick’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated annually on March 17th. This day represents the death of Saint Patrick in 493 CE. Saint Patrick’s significance was in his bringing Catholicism to Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated every year by the Roman Catholic Church as a “holy day of obligation.” It is also commemorated by the Church of Ireland and on this day, Lenten fasts are broken.

Symbolism from Saint Patrick that is inherent in the holiday is of widespread recognition in the Irish culture. For example, the shamrock is symbolic of the three leaves that Saint Patrick used to describe the holy trinity of Catholicism to the Irish people.

Today, the Irish celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in the form of festivals and parades where people arrived decked out in the traditional green attire. Corned beef and Guinness beer serve as popular fare for patrons taking part in the celebration!

As an inspiration from this well reknowned holiday, below is an Irish blessing to brighten your day!

May you always have walls for the winds,
a roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
laughter to cheer you,
those you love near you,
and all your heart might desire.
