President Obama has declared Monday, January 20, 2014, as a National Day of Service in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Pursuant to the president’s call to action, many institutions and organizations offer opportunities for Americans to volunteer serving their local communities.

If you would like to participate in this effort, mark your calendar for Monday, January 20, 2014, 10am-2pm and join NOVA students, faculty and staff for the Fifth Annual NOVA SERVES: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

The service event will take place at the Alexandria Campus on Monday, January 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This year’s event will consist of assembling 20,000 food kits in partnership with the Stop Hunger Now organization.

T-shirts will be provided to the first 200 volunteers. Join the movement to end hunger in our lifetime. Help us reach our goal to package more than 20,000 meals. Working together we can create a world without hunger. To register please click here.

If you are unable to attend this event, members of the NOVA family may choose to participate in the 27th Annual We Feed Our People MLK Holiday celebration through service.  Saturday and Sunday January 18 – 19, volunteers will gather at the Howard University Law School cafeteria to prepare meals to feed the most vulnerable, our homeless population. On Monday, January 20, volunteers are asked to gather at the “Big Chair” in the Anacostia section of the District of Columbia at 10:00 a.m. to serve the prepared meals and provide warm clothing to the homeless. Slots for volunteers to work are for 2 hour periods, however those who choose to do so may volunteer for longer periods of time. To volunteer, please click here.

Please consider celebrating Dr. King’s legacy through these various volunteer opportunities.

You Are Invited to Richmond Legislative Days

Did you know that NOVA sponsors a trip to meet Virginia State Legislators?
Every January, the college organizes delegations from NOVA to visit the state capitol in Richmond and meet with legislators from each campus’ service district. They discuss what the general assembly has done to support two-year colleges and, specifically NOVA. Students have the opportunity to share personal experiences and how NOVA has helped them with their educational and career goals. In addition, the delegations were formally recognized on the General Assembly floor as special visitors.
If you are interested in taking part in this wonderful opportunity, please contact ELI Student Life at elistulife@nvcc.edu 703-425-5489
