Make MLK Day a Day On! Not a Day Off!

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
--Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mark your calendars... January 17, 2011 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. Since many schools and workplaces have MLK day off it has been designated as a National Day of Service, a chance for everyone to take a few hours to give back to those in need rather than just taking a day off. The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative.

NOVA has identified seven community organizations in the Northern Virginia area and established “NOVA Serves” to help connect students, faculty, and staff with local nonprofits that need our help this January 17th. You can join the NOVA community by putting together school supply kits for children in Iraq and Afghanistan, working at a thrift shop to benefit Habitat for Humanity or lending a hand at a food distribution center to support local needy families. For more details and to register for a NOVA Serves event go to: www.nvcc.edu/mlk.

If you can't volunteer on MLK Day, you can still help out by donating school supplies that will be assembled into kits for children in Iraq and Afghanistan. Again, check the NOVA Serves page for a list of school supplies that can be dropped off to any campus Student Activities Office (or at ELI). And for those of you residing outside Northern VA, you can easily find volunteer opportunities in your area at Serve.gov.

We hope you all will join us in making MLK Day a day on, not a day off.
